How often should my car be serviced?

Many vehicles need servicing approximately every 12 months or 10,000–12,000 miles, but the correct interval depends on the manufacturer's schedule, engine type and driving conditions. We can help you identify the appropriate interval.

What's the difference between the servicing packages?

The main difference is the number of maintenance items included. Oil & Filter focuses on essential lubrication, Interim adds the air filter, Full adds the cabin filter, and Major adds applicable spark plugs and fuel filter replacement.

Can I service my car earlier than recommended?

Yes. Earlier servicing may be beneficial for vehicles used for frequent short journeys, heavy traffic or demanding driving conditions. We can advise whether an earlier oil change or additional maintenance is worthwhile.

Can I service my car if it's overdue?

Yes. If your service is overdue, arranging maintenance promptly is sensible. We'll review your vehicle's mileage, service history and condition to recommend appropriate maintenance.

Will independent servicing affect my manufacturer's warranty?

Independent servicing does not automatically invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. However, the correct maintenance schedule, specifications, parts and documentation must be followed. Tell us if your vehicle is under warranty so we can discuss the requirements.

How long does a car service take?

An Oil & Filter Service typically takes around 30–60 minutes, an Interim Service 1–1.5 hours, a Full Service 1.5–2.5 hours and a Major Service 2–4 hours. These are estimates and depend on your vehicle and any additional findings.

How much does servicing cost at CARBE?

Our labour-only starting prices are £65 for Oil & Filter, £90 for Interim, £150 for Full and £220 for Major servicing. Oil and replacement parts are charged separately. Contact us for a quote specific to your vehicle.

Why does engine oil need changing?

Engine oil lubricates moving components, helps manage heat and carries contaminants to the oil filter. Over time, it can degrade or become contaminated, reducing its effectiveness. Regular oil changes help protect your engine.

How do I know if my engine oil needs replacing?

Check your manufacturer's service schedule, mileage and service history. A service reminder may also appear. Oil colour alone isn't a reliable indicator of condition, so following the correct service interval is important.

Why is my engine oil level dropping?

Some engines consume a small amount of oil, but excessive consumption may indicate leaks, worn components or another problem. If you regularly need to top up your oil, we recommend investigating the cause.

What happens if I miss a service?

Missing a service can allow oil degradation, filter restrictions or wear-related issues to go unnoticed. One late service doesn't automatically mean damage has occurred, but arranging maintenance promptly is advisable.

Can you reset my service indicator?

Yes. Where supported by your vehicle, CARBE can reset the service reminder after the appropriate maintenance has been completed. A warning relating to an unresolved fault should not simply be cleared without investigation.

Do you replace spark plugs?

Yes. We can replace spark plugs where applicable to your engine. Worn spark plugs can contribute to misfires, poor starting and reduced performance. We use suitable replacement parts for your vehicle.

Do you replace air, pollen and fuel filters?

Yes. We offer replacement of engine air filters, cabin/pollen filters and fuel filters where applicable. The correct replacement interval depends on the vehicle's maintenance schedule and operating conditions.

Can CARBE help me track my next service?

We can advise when your next service is likely to be due based on mileage and manufacturer guidance. We may introduce optional service reminders in future.

Brakes

Do you offer brake inspections and repairs?

Yes. CARBE can inspect and repair a range of braking system components, including pads, discs, callipers, brake fluid and related parts. We'll assess the problem and explain the recommended work before proceeding.

How do I know if my brake pads are worn?

Common signs include squealing, grinding, reduced braking performance or a brake wear warning. However, pads can also become worn without obvious symptoms. An inspection is the most reliable way to assess their condition.

How long do brake pads last?

Brake pad life varies with driving style, road conditions, vehicle weight and the braking system. There is no single replacement mileage suitable for every vehicle. We recommend checking their remaining thickness and condition.

Do brake discs need replacing with brake pads?

Not always. Brake discs can sometimes be retained if they meet the manufacturer's specifications and are in suitable condition. We'll check thickness, wear, damage and surface condition before recommending replacement.

Why are my brakes squeaking?

Squeaking can result from brake pad materials, moisture, surface contamination, vibration or worn components. Some occasional noise may be harmless, but persistent squeaking should be inspected.

Why are my brakes grinding?

Grinding may indicate severely worn brake pads, damaged discs or another braking problem. Continuing to drive could reduce braking performance and cause further damage. Arrange an inspection promptly and avoid driving if braking is affected.

Why does my steering wheel vibrate when braking?

Possible causes include brake disc thickness variation, uneven braking forces or worn suspension components. An inspection can help identify the underlying cause rather than replacing parts unnecessarily.

Why does my brake pedal feel soft or spongy?

A soft brake pedal may indicate air in the hydraulic system, fluid leaks or a hydraulic component problem. Because braking performance could be affected, avoid driving until the system has been assessed.

Why is my brake warning light on?

A brake warning light may indicate an applied parking brake, low brake fluid, worn pads or a braking system fault. If the warning remains on or braking feels abnormal, stop safely and seek professional advice.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Many manufacturers recommend brake fluid replacement around every two years, although requirements vary. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can affect performance. Follow your vehicle's specified maintenance schedule.

Can you repair sticking brake callipers?

Yes, subject to inspection. A sticking calliper can cause overheating, uneven brake wear or a vehicle pulling to one side. Depending on its condition, repair or replacement may be appropriate.

Why does my car pull to one side when braking?

Uneven braking forces, sticking callipers, tyre issues or suspension problems can cause pulling. This may indicate a safety concern, particularly if the pulling is severe. Have the vehicle inspected before further use.

Can worn brakes cause an MOT failure?

Yes. Excessively worn, damaged or ineffective braking components can result in an MOT failure. We can inspect your brakes before the test and provide a quote for any necessary repairs.

How long does brake replacement take?

Brake pad replacement commonly takes around 1–1.5 hours, while disc and pad replacement may take 1.5–3 hours. The exact time depends on the vehicle, axle and condition of the components.

Is it safe to drive with noisy brakes?

Not all brake noises indicate immediate danger, but grinding, persistent squealing or changes in braking performance should not be ignored. If braking feels unsafe, stop driving and arrange professional assistance.

Suspension & Steering

What suspension repairs does CARBE offer?

CARBE works on a range of suspension and steering components, including shock absorbers, springs, suspension arms, bushes, drop links, ball joints and track rods. We'll assess the vehicle before recommending repairs.

Why does my car knock over bumps?

Knocking noises can come from worn drop links, suspension bushes, ball joints, shock absorber mounts or other components. The source is not always obvious, so inspection is important before replacing parts.

How do I know if my shock absorbers are worn?

Possible signs include excessive bouncing, poor handling, fluid leakage or unusual tyre wear. These symptoms can also have other causes, so we recommend checking the suspension before deciding on replacement.

What are suspension drop links?

Drop links connect the anti-roll bar to the suspension. They help control body roll when cornering. Worn links may produce knocking noises, particularly over uneven roads.

What happens when a coil spring breaks?

A broken spring can affect ride height, handling and tyre clearance. In some cases, a broken section may damage a tyre. If you suspect a broken spring, avoid driving until the vehicle is assessed.

Why is my car pulling to one side?

Possible causes include tyre pressures, uneven tyre wear, wheel alignment, braking problems or worn suspension components. We'll investigate the likely cause and recommend appropriate checks or repairs.

Why is my steering wheel vibrating?

Steering vibration can be caused by wheel imbalance, damaged tyres, wheel alignment issues, worn suspension components or braking problems. The speed and conditions under which it occurs help narrow down the cause.

What causes uneven tyre wear?

Common causes include incorrect tyre pressures, alignment problems, worn suspension components and driving conditions. Finding the underlying cause can help prevent new tyres from wearing prematurely.

What are suspension bushes?

Suspension bushes are flexible components that help absorb vibration and allow controlled movement between suspension parts. As they wear, they may cause knocking, poor handling or unwanted movement.

What are ball joints?

Ball joints allow suspension and steering components to move while remaining connected. Excessive wear can affect handling and vehicle safety. Severely worn ball joints require prompt attention.

What are track rod ends?

Track rod ends connect steering components and help transfer steering movement to the wheels. Worn track rod ends can cause looseness, knocking, steering problems or uneven tyre wear.

Can worn suspension affect braking?

Yes. Suspension problems can affect tyre contact with the road, vehicle stability and weight transfer during braking. Maintaining suspension components helps preserve predictable handling and braking performance.

Can suspension problems cause an MOT failure?

Yes. Excessively worn, damaged or insecure suspension and steering components may cause an MOT failure depending on the defect and severity.

Will I need wheel alignment after suspension repairs?

Certain steering and suspension repairs can alter wheel alignment. We'll advise whether an alignment check or adjustment is recommended following the work.

How long do suspension repairs take?

Many individual suspension repairs take approximately 1–4 hours, although complex work can take longer. The estimate depends on the component, vehicle design and condition of the fixings.

Vehicle Diagnostics

What is vehicle diagnostics?

Vehicle diagnostics involves investigating faults using electronic information, testing equipment, inspections and mechanical knowledge. A diagnostic assessment helps identify the likely cause of a problem before repairs are recommended.

Do you offer engine management light diagnostics?

Yes. CARBE can investigate engine management warning lights using suitable diagnostic equipment and further checks where necessary. Our aim is to understand the underlying problem rather than simply clear the warning.

What causes an engine management light?

An engine management light can be triggered by ignition, fuel delivery, emissions, sensors, intake or other engine control issues. Diagnostic testing helps narrow down the cause.

Can you reset dashboard warning lights?

Where appropriate, we can reset service indicators and clear fault codes after the relevant work has been completed. Warning lights relating to unresolved problems may return and should be investigated.

What's the difference between a fault scan and diagnosis?

A fault scan retrieves stored diagnostic information. A proper diagnostic assessment interprets that information and may include live data checks, electrical measurements, component tests or mechanical inspection.

Can my car have problems without a warning light?

Yes. Mechanical and electrical problems can develop without triggering a dashboard warning. Noises, vibrations, starting difficulties or poor performance may still require investigation.

Why does my warning light return after being reset?

Clearing a fault code does not necessarily repair the cause. If the problem remains, the vehicle may detect it again and reactivate the warning light.

Can you diagnose intermittent faults?

We can investigate intermittent problems using reported symptoms, stored fault information and appropriate testing. Some issues require additional time or monitoring because they don't occur consistently.

Why is my car losing power?

Loss of power can result from ignition, fuel supply, air intake, turbocharger, exhaust or transmission problems. A diagnostic assessment can help identify the cause and avoid unnecessary parts replacement.

Why is my car using more fuel than usual?

Increased fuel consumption may be caused by driving conditions, tyre pressures, servicing issues, faulty sensors or mechanical faults. We'll consider the symptoms and available evidence before recommending repairs.

Why is my engine misfiring?

A misfire may be caused by spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel injectors, air leaks or mechanical problems. Persistent misfires can damage other components, so prompt investigation is recommended.

Why is my car struggling to start?

Starting problems can involve the battery, starter motor, fuel system, ignition system or engine management controls. The symptoms and diagnostic results help determine which tests are needed.

Why does my car stall?

Stalling may result from fuel delivery problems, sensors, electrical faults, air intake issues or other mechanical causes. Because unexpected stalling can be dangerous, arrange an assessment promptly.

Why is my car idling roughly?

Rough idling may be linked to ignition, fuel delivery, air leaks, sensors or engine condition. Diagnostic testing can help determine whether maintenance or repair is needed.

Can you diagnose electrical problems?

Yes. CARBE can investigate a range of vehicle electrical faults using suitable testing methods. The assessment may involve checking power supplies, fuses, wiring, connections, sensors and related components.

Can you diagnose charging system problems?

Yes. We can investigate battery and charging issues, including possible alternator faults, poor connections or excessive electrical demand. Testing helps distinguish a failing battery from other causes.

What does an ABS warning light mean?

An ABS warning indicates a problem detected by the anti-lock braking system. Normal braking may still operate, but anti-lock functionality may be unavailable. Arrange an assessment promptly, especially if other brake warnings appear.

What does an airbag warning light mean?

An airbag warning indicates a fault detected in the supplementary restraint system. One or more safety features may not function as intended during a collision. The fault should be investigated promptly.

How long does diagnostic testing take?

An initial diagnostic assessment commonly takes around 30–90 minutes. Complex or intermittent problems may require further testing. We'll explain when additional investigation is necessary and discuss any extra charges.

Will diagnostics tell me exactly which part needs replacing?

Not always. Fault codes identify detected problems or affected systems, but don't necessarily identify a defective component. Further testing may be needed to establish the root cause.

MOT & Vehicle Inspections

Can CARBE arrange an MOT?

CARBE can help arrange an MOT test through an appropriate testing provider. We do not advertise ourselves as an authorised in-house MOT testing station.

Do you offer MOT preparation?

Yes. We can inspect relevant vehicle components before an MOT and advise on problems that may need attention. This can help identify issues before the official test.

What is a pre-MOT inspection?

A pre-MOT inspection checks relevant safety and roadworthiness items before the official MOT. It can highlight visible defects and maintenance concerns, but it is not itself an MOT test or guarantee of a pass.

Can you repair MOT failures?

Yes. CARBE can assess and quote for a range of MOT failure repairs within our workshop capabilities. Share your MOT failure report so we can identify the work required.

Can you arrange an MOT retest?

We can help coordinate a retest where appropriate. Retest timing, eligibility and any charges depend on the authorised MOT testing station and applicable rules.

What is the CARBE 50-Point Vehicle Health Check?

Our complimentary 50-Point Vehicle Health Check reviews key vehicle safety and maintenance areas, including relevant tyres, brakes, suspension, lights, fluid levels and visible signs of wear or leaks. It is designed to help identify potential concerns and give you practical advice.

Yes. It is included with servicing, brake repairs, suspension work, vehicle diagnostics and other workshop services, subject to the checks being safely accessible and applicable to the vehicle.

Does the health check replace an MOT?

No. Our vehicle health check is not an official MOT and cannot guarantee that every possible defect will be identified. It provides additional information about visible condition and maintenance concerns.

What happens if you find another problem?

We'll explain what we've found, how urgent it appears and what repair options may be available. We won't carry out additional chargeable work without your approval.

Do you offer pre-purchase inspections?

You can contact CARBE about inspecting a used vehicle before purchase. We can assess agreed accessible components and report concerns, although no inspection can guarantee a vehicle is completely fault-free.

Can you inspect my car before a long journey?

Yes. A pre-journey inspection can cover relevant tyres, fluid levels, lights, brakes and other accessible safety items. We can advise on any concerns before you travel.

Can you inspect a vehicle before its warranty expires?

We can discuss a vehicle inspection to identify visible concerns before the warranty expires. This does not replace a manufacturer's warranty assessment, but it may help you identify issues worth raising with the provider.

Can you check unusual noises and vibrations?

Yes. We can investigate unusual noises and vibrations, which may involve inspection, diagnostic testing or a road test where safe and appropriate.

Can you provide inspection findings and recommendations?

Yes. We can explain the findings of an agreed inspection and recommend appropriate next steps. Where a written report is required, please request it when arranging the appointment.

Engine, Cooling & Common Problems

Why is my car overheating?

Overheating may result from low coolant, leaks, thermostat problems, cooling fan faults, water pump issues or other cooling system problems. Stop safely, switch off the engine and allow it to cool. Never remove a hot pressurised coolant cap.

Why is my car losing coolant?

Coolant loss can result from leaking hoses, radiators, water pumps, expansion tanks or internal engine faults. Even small leaks can worsen, so arrange an inspection rather than repeatedly topping up without investigating.

Why is my car heater blowing cold air?

Possible causes include low coolant, thermostat problems, restricted heater matrix flow or heating control faults. We'll investigate the symptoms and relevant cooling system components.

Why does my cooling fan keep running?

Cooling fans may operate after the engine is switched off to manage residual heat. However, unusually frequent or prolonged operation can indicate a cooling system, sensor or control issue. We can investigate if the behaviour appears abnormal.

Why is my car leaking oil?

Oil leaks can come from seals, gaskets, oil filter housings, sump components or other engine parts. The severity depends on the leak location and rate. If oil pressure is low or a red oil warning appears, stop the engine.

Why is my car leaking fluid underneath?

The fluid could be coolant, engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid or harmless water from the air-conditioning system. Identifying the fluid and leak location is important. Suspected brake fluid leaks require urgent attention.

Why won't my car start?

A vehicle may fail to start because of a flat battery, starter motor fault, fuel delivery problem, ignition issue or other electrical or mechanical fault. CARBE can help investigate the likely cause.

Why does my battery keep going flat?

Repeated battery discharge may be caused by an ageing battery, charging system fault, excessive electrical draw or infrequent use. Testing can help identify whether the battery or another component is responsible.

What are signs of a failing alternator?

Possible symptoms include battery warnings, dimming lights, repeated flat batteries or electrical problems. These symptoms can have other causes, so charging system testing is recommended before replacing an alternator.

Why is my engine making a rattling noise?

Rattling can come from exhaust components, auxiliary drive parts, engine mounts, timing components or internal engine wear. Persistent or severe noises should be investigated promptly, especially if accompanied by warning lights.

Why is my car producing unusual smoke?

Smoke colour and circumstances can provide clues. Blue smoke may suggest oil burning, persistent white smoke may indicate coolant-related problems, and black smoke may indicate excessive fuel or combustion issues. An inspection is needed to identify the cause.

Why is my car struggling to accelerate?

Poor acceleration may involve ignition, fuel delivery, air intake, turbocharger, exhaust or transmission problems. We'll consider the symptoms and carry out appropriate checks to narrow down the cause.

Why is my engine temperature fluctuating?

Temperature fluctuations can result from thermostat operation, coolant problems, sensor faults or other cooling system issues. Unusual readings should be investigated, particularly if the engine is overheating.

What should I do if a red warning light appears?

A red warning light can indicate an urgent safety or mechanical issue. Stop in a safe location as soon as possible, consult the vehicle handbook and seek assistance. Do not continue driving if the warning indicates oil pressure, overheating or braking danger.

When should I stop driving and seek assistance?

Stop safely if you experience severe overheating, a red oil pressure warning, major brake problems, significant steering difficulty, heavy smoke or another condition that makes the vehicle unsafe. Arrange recovery or professional assistance rather than risking further damage.
